Gallery
BRAND new to the Paddington gallery scene is Australian Naive Art, opened by Sandra Warner, a respected art gallery manager, curator and author of the coffee table tome Australia Naive Art (Craftsman House, $75). The gallery represents more than 20 painters, ceramicists and furniture-makers who display an incredibly varied interpretation of the naive vision. There are true naive artists, such as Angela Morris with her witty detailed scenes of Sydney life, plus erotic images of our social history by Kevin Lane, including nefarious '20s and '30s gangsters and molls, as well as contemporary work by Byron Bay-based award-winning painter John Campbell.
Also on sale is a selection of desirable furniture by John Venerosa including sculptural, colourful cabinets some of which are decorated with Aboriginal-style dot painting. Then there are ceramic plaques by Janice Raynor who specialises in visual puns and send-ups of famous paintings. Prices are accessible, starting from $80 to $3,000 for paintings.
Australian Naive Art, 43 Greens Road, Paddington, 9360 3015. Wed-Sat 11am-6pm, Sun noon-5pm.

Collect
HANG the irony, literally, by investing in original copies of works by the masters. Sacha Gallery stocks "original" oil canvases by Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne, Gauguin, Kahlo, Renoir, Klimt, almost every other famous painter to have ever lived and someone called Andy Warhol.
If a copy of De Lempicka's Sleeping Woman is not in stock when you call, gallery owner Kester Macfarlane will commission his talented team in Saigon to craft another one. At $660 for a 910mm x 1150mm canvas, it is a most reasonable purchase. Or perhaps you can only stretch to $165, in which case Macfarlane will sell you Van Gogh's Self-portrait With Bandaged Ear (Samuel Courtauld paid #10,000 for the original in 1928).
373 Bourke Street, Darlinghurst, 9363 4953. Tues-Sat 10.30am-5.30pm.
